Small Businesses Should Know Their Neighborhood (and neighbors)

I cam across this article (the link is at the botttom of the post) from Ken Muller about small businesses and i thought it was right on point. What separates a small business from larger corporations are the people. I can recall growing up in Jackson Heights and my local store owners not only knew me, but they knew my parents and their preferences. This was especially true at my corner drug store. Steve, the pharmacist, knew me, my sister and my parents and more importantly knew our tendencies and to a further extent knew our medical histories. What this established was a loyalty that came from within. Steve was associated with making us feel better. We would go to the doctor and then Steve would give us the medicine that made us feel better.

This is my experience and story, but as a small business owner what can you do to drive this type of loyalty? Ken makes some great points and even though I work in advertising I think being a great neighbor is a great form of no cost advertising and one worth investing in.

PS 32 in Flushing to host JDRF Kid's Walk Fundraiser

For the last four years, P.S.32 in Flushing, Queens has held their very own JDRF Kid’s Walk to help fight juvenile diabetes. They do this in memory of a special little girl with a smile as bright as the sun, Claudialee Nicanor Gomez. Claudialee passed away when she was only 6 years old due to complications related to undiagnosed juvenile diabetes. To lose someone at such a young age is a tragedy no parent, family member, teacher or classmate should face. Claudialee’s school wants to make a difference so that no other family has to go through such loss. Every year they raise money and walk in memory of Claudialee and to make a change. Help them find a cure for diabetes.

The website below has links where you can donate to the P.S.32 JDRF Kids Walk and where you can buy a “Claudialee’s Crusaders”  t-shirt.

Guest Blogger : Michelle Kawka, Photographer

Michelle Kawka is a professional photographer who I have gotten to know over the years at various networking and corporate events. She is a tireless worker and produces amazing work in several different mediums. Her ability to jump from a fashion shoot, to a wedding ceremony and to a professional headshot session or even producing a corporate video is nothing short of amazing.

Michelle also networks through social media and has a top notch online presence. Her website, besides being very SEO friendly (searchable keywords, updated content, photos & videos), has everything you need to know about her, who she is, what she does, examples of her work, client testimonials, as well as a constantly updated blog and instagram feed.

I have enjoyed reading and learning from her blog so I have asked her if I could lift some of her "greatest hits". She has kindly obliged and the first link up in this series is her piece:

So it would come as no surprise that she receives plenty of inquires for her services via email. What might surprise you is what she will not do via email and that is contained in her blog and I have provided the link above this paragraph.

The Renaissance has been the couples’ choice for many years, and was recently awarded The Brides’ Choice Award from WeddingWire in 2013. One memorable tradition at the Renaissance is the Love Lock tree. Typically the sweethearts' names or initials are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away to symbolize unbreakable love.

“I was so excited to attend the Renaissance Bridal Showcase last year.” Attending was such a special honor. I connected with many brides and other vendors at the expo to give more options to my brides and customers. The level of professionalism and confidence at The Renaissance will make any wedding event a memorable and unique experience.”

2014 Queens World Film Festival

Queens World Film Festival Returns for 4th Annual Event
March 4-9, 2014

The fourth Annual Queens World Film Festival (“QWFF”) is thrilled to return to the most diverse community on the planet on March 4-9, 2014 with a riveting program of feature films and shorts. The Festival is set to open at the prestigious Museum of the Moving Image on March 4 and will roll out to the Secret Theatre in LIC, the Nesva Hotel also in LIC and the historic PS 69 in Jackson Heights.

In addition to integrating the work of local Queens Filmmakers The Festival is spotlighting a dazzling selection of foreign films from around the world including Belgium, Iran, India, Spain, Kosovo, Switzerland, Vietnam, the UK and Canada in an exciting roster spread out over  5 days.  QWFF is excited to announce a one night only screening and  the World Premier of the Director’s Cut of the of 2014 Academy Award Nominated Documentary “THE ACT OF KILLING”.  Directed by UK Filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer, the doc portrays the story of national guilt potentially exhumed by a love of movies.

QWFF is thrilled to announce the 2014 QWFF Spirit of Queens Recipients: independent film icon Hal Hartly and Executive Director of MoMI Carl Goodman. This honor, which recognizes one extraordinary artist and one outstanding citizen who embody the spirit of our borough, is poised to become a hallmark of the annual film festival.

Hartley has worked beyond the Hollywood establishment for over 20 years. His offbeat, quirky pictures of the road less traveled are a direct line to the heart of our borough. Hartley’s films deal with the repercussions and pleasures of playing on the outskirts of conventionality and his next feature is in pre production to be shot here in Queens.

Goodman has steered MoMI back onto its rightful path as a Queens Institution and world class screening facility and has put the museum back onto the forefront of the indie film circuit.

In the past, QWFF honored LONG ISLAND CITY cult MOVIE DIRECTOR Lloyd Kaufman, ACADEMY AWARD-NOMINATED ACTRESS KAREN BLACK, and CITY councilmembers Danny Dromm and Jimmy Van Bramer. It is truly an honor to welcome both Hal and Carl to the QWFF family this year.

Make Your Next Presentation a Winner

The Book of Lists reports the Top Ten Human Fears as:

  1. Speaking before a Group
  2. Heights
  3. Insects and bugs
  4. Financial problems
  5. Deep water
  6. Sickness
  7. Death
  8. Flying
  9. Loneliness
  10. Dogs
Well, I think we all can agree public speaking is no one's favorite, yet some people do it much better than others. Why? I had an old boss who drilled the "5 P's" into my head:
1. Proper
2. Planning
3. Prevents
4. Poor
5. Performance

My trick is have as much information as you can gather and then edit on the fly while you read your audience. If you are the first and only presenter, i may go a little long and throw a quick story to help prove my point, but if I am the last speaker of a two hour meeting, I keep it short and sweet and try to finish with a punchline. Trust me when I tell you, your audience will appreciate it

Here is another blog post I came across which inspired mine:

Tips on Public Speaking by Josh Hansen
