3RD Annual Sunnyside Santathon for Charity - Saturday December 6th

The 3nd Annual Santathon presented by Sunnyside's Boulevard Bars will take place on Saturday,
December 6th, starting @ 3 PM, and will be sponsored by S.K.I. Beer. Santathon is a festive pub crawl for charity that celebrates the community of Sunnyside, local businesses, residents, visitors, and the jovial spirit of the holiday season. Last year's Santathon raised more than $10,000 in
monetary and new toy donations.

All proceeds from the sale of wristbands will go to buy toys for local kids most in need this holiday season. All participating bars (Jack’s Fire Dept.,Bar 43, The Courtyard Ale House, Maggie Mae's, The Gaslight, Arriba,Arriba, Sidetracks, Molly Blooms, PJ Horgan's, McGuinness's Saloon, and
Bliss Street Station) will also be collecting monetary and new, unwrapped toy donations from now until Christmas.

Organizations that have received toys from our past two Santathons include St. Teresa's in Woodside, St. Raphael's in Sunnyside, the 108th Precinct, the MercyFirst Angel Guardian Orphanage in Brooklyn, the Metro Homeless Shelter on Queens Boulevard, the Post-Hurricane Sandy 94th
Street Toy Drive, and the Hour Children Center in Long Island City. Since its inception two years ago, the Sunnyside's Boulevard Bars organization has held multiple events in the neighborhood and raised more than $25,000 for charities and local organizations, including the Sunnyside/Woodside Boys & Girls Club, the 52st Street Fire Station (Engine 325/Ladder 163), and Warrior Events, an organization that works with wounded veterans stationed at the Walter Reed National Military
Medical Center, the U.S. Army's flagship medical center.

Sunnyside Chamber Presents Snowflake Lighting

On Monday, December 1, 6pm at the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce Sabba Park Snowflake Lighting – Queens Blvd. between 48th/50th Streets in Sunnyside.

There will be a prayer by Father Joseph Jerome of All Saints Church, and Chamber President Rigoberto Cardoso will flip the switch – signaling the time to get seriously into the spirit of peace on earth.

The Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce Sabba Park lighting is our oldest local holiday tradition and all are welcome. You know you want to sing along (lyrics available) "O, Come All Ye Faithful," even if you are Buddhist!

There will be traditional religious carols by local AcapellaQ (Thank you, Melissa Orlando and Paula Hostetter), empanadas from I Love Paraguay, hot chocolate from Starbucks, fresh cookies and treats from Murphy's Lobster Grill and NY Eats, and lots of good people like you!

After the lighting, singing with popular favorites continues at 46th Street/Bliss Station Plaza.

BONUS:The elevated station acoustics makes all of us sound like better singers than we thought we were. And 6:45 brings the arrival of Santa!

This program is our way of thanking veterans living or shopping in Queens for their service to our country and our community. Veterans will be given an identification card that, when presented at a participating business, will enable them to receive a predetermined discount on goods or services.

Businesses wishing to offer a discount will receive a decal identifying them as a participant. Additionally, each business will be listed on the Queens Chamber as well as Assemblyman Simanowitz's website for the duration of their participation. If you decide the program is not right for your business, you can drop out at any time by contacting the Chamber. At a minimum, your business will be contacted on an annual basis to

HALLOWEEN FAMILY FUN DAY - FREE Saturday November 1st

The Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) staff and volunteers transform the 1895 landmark Renaissance style headquarters into a fun-filled haunted house for children and families.   While Halloween time can involve more tricks than treats JCAL holds this annual event to provide a haven for its young people throughout the community filled with fun activities.  The Halloween Family Fun Day offers treats, costume contests, art & crafts, a “Thriller” dance workshop and prizes.

Volunteers from local Youth Service Organizations within the community participate in this annual activity in helping with the set up and performing as “Creepy Characters” in the Haunted House tour.  The activities will take place throughout the building which will also give first time visitors a full tour of the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning dance studios, classrooms and theater.

On Sunday, October 19th, on the closing day of the World’s Fair Anniversary Celebrations, the World’s Fair Anniversary Committee will be holding a special FREE EVENT: a World’s Fair Scavenger Hunt throughout Flushing Meadows Corona Park. 

Participants can compete in teams of 2-6 people. At registration, team members will be given t-shirts, and each team will be given a totebag and a list of clues with a map of Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The clues will test participants’ knowledge of both World’s Fairs and the Park as it is now, directing the teams to various cultural institutions and monuments throughout and around Flushing Meadows Corona Park. At each location, they will be given a token , have to answer a question, or take a photo to prove that they were there. At 5:30pm, the teams will return to Queens Theatre. The team that will have collected the most tokens will be the winner of the World’s Fair Scavenger Hunt and will win great prizes. The top runners up will receive prizes as well. At 6:00pm, there will be a free concert in the Park by Yesterday and Today: A Tribute to the Beatles. Winners will be announced from the stage at intermission.

M.A.K.U Soundsystem is an immigrant band from New York City. With most of its members hailing from Colombia, M.A.K.U embodies an active quest for identity through sound and bodies in motion, and puts on a party for everyday people. Born in 2010 the band has independently released two full-length albums, one EP, and toured across the U.S. with their fiery grooves.

M.A.K.U’s distinctive sound is enriched with a variety of musical backgrounds brought to the table by each of its members. BOLTS PRELIMINARY ROSTER STARTS TO TAKE SHAPE

The roster for the Inaugural Season of Brooklyn Bolts football has started to take shape as training camp opens in Coral Springs, FL.  The team features players from football factories like Notre Dame, Auburn, Oregon, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee.

At the Quarterback position, Corey Robinson - who is one of just five quarterbacks in NCAA FBS history to throw for over 3,000 yards and accumulate 3,000 yards of totel offense in four different seasons.  The Paduch, KY native who attended Troy University ranks ninth all-time with 13,477 career passing yards.  He will be competing with Kolton Browning from the University of Lousiana-Monroe.  The former All-Sun Belt signal caller finished his senior campaign with 2,179 passing yards and 23 touchdowns despite missing two games due to injury.

Joining Robinson and Browning in the back field are Dennis Johnson - who appeared in eight games for the Houston Texans last season, and Mario Fannin, who was a member of the 2011 BCS Champion Auburn Tigers.  Fannin spent three seasons with the Denver Broncos organization following his time with the Auburn Tigers.

Another recognizable name on the Bolts roster is Mike Golic, Jr. who spent four seasons with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.  He has spent parts of the last two years with the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Pirates.  His father is a host of the national radio program Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio.

Sunnyside's Boulevard Bars' 2nd Annual Halfway to St. Patrick's Day Music Festival will take place this Saturday, September 27th. There will be live music at all 11 of the bars/restaurants that make up Sunnyside's Boulevard Bars, including Jack's Fire Dept. It used to be Jack's Ale House, but recently underwent a renovation courtesy of Spike TV's Bar Rescue.

This Season At Flushing Town Hall

We have an exciting season upon us at Flushing Town Hall this Fall, with a wide array of performances, workshops and more. On the musical horizon: Grammy Award-winner Arturo O’Farrill will bring his talents to Queens for a night of hot Latin jazz on September 19. M.A.K.U SoundSystem's day-long drumming workshop, concert and dance party is slated for October 4. And, on October 5, Brazilian master drummer Dende will lead a jam session and workshop, Drumming Under the Moon in Flushing Town Hall’s beautiful garden.









These fantastic events are just a sampling of the diverse programming that Flushing Town Hall features at its historic venue. This fall, Flushing Town Hall will host everything from a piano recital by 10-year-old Chinese prodigy Huang Tiange to a jazz performance led by the legendary Jimmy Heath to a unique workshop on canning and lacto-fermentation.

Flushing Town Hall celebrates global arts for a global community, drawing audiences from the five boroughs and beyond. Unveiling of the partnership between the Myrtle Avenue BID and Neighborhood Plaza Partnership at 71^st Avenue Plaza and Venditti Square.

On Friday, September 5^th 2014, a new program initiative at a DOT pedestrian plaza will be unveiled in Ridgewood, Queens at the intersection of 71^st Avenue, Stephen Street and Myrtle Avenue.  Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District, with Ridgewood Local Development Corporation, is the city’s partner in caring for this space – providing additional programming as well as daily maintenance.  The space is also maintained by Atlantic Maintenance Corporation, the BID’s sanitation service provider for the district.   The additional maintenance partner for the plaza is Neighborhood Plaza Partnership (NPP) -- a unique workforce development and neighborhood revitalization program that provides transitional employment and job placement to hard-to-employ individuals while helping communities throughout the city maintain green public plazas in their commercial districts.  

Funding from the City Council Queens Delegation is helping underwrite NPP’s service in 7 plazas in Queens, including 71^st Avenue Plaza, represented by Council Member Elizabeth Crowley. Funding has also been allocated by Council Member Antonio Reynoso for horticulture and maintenance of Venditti Square, another public space along Myrtle Avenue dedicated to Detective Anthony J. Venditti in 1989.

“City Council support is crucial for plazas in communities without the significant resources it takes to manage these heavily used public spaces.” said Laura Hansen, Executive Director of The Neighborhood Plaza Partnership.   “Through the workforce programs of The Horticultural Society and the Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (ACE), we can deliver a workforce with the specialized horticultural training to keep these plazas clean, green, and beautiful year round.”

Theodore M. Renz, Executive Director of the BID, agreed saying “I also want to thank our local city council representatives, the speaker and other city council members for this vital and necessary support.”  The program will ensure that the plaza continues to provide a well-maintained, attractive space for the BID’s year-round calendar of events and the daily enjoyment of residents and shoppers.
