Where to Watch the World Cup!

Sure, the United States might have less than 1% chance to win the trophy according to famed statistician Nate Silver, but isn’t the World Cup supposed to be about international cooperation, anyway? No matter which team you’re rooting for, there’s plenty of places to celebrate in Downtown Brooklyn.
You can catch the games on the big screen outdoors at Metrotech Commons every weekday (except Thursdays, when BAM holds their popular R&B Festival) – a perfect complement to the mostly weekend games being hosted Under the Archway by our friends over at the DUMBO Improvement District.
If a little food and drink to go along with your games is more your speed, check out these hot spots:
  • Brooklyn Brewhouse (229 Duffield Street): Keep your eyes peeled to one of this pub’s 12 HDTVs, which will be showing games with full sound. During game times, there’ll be $5 beer all day, as well as regular happy hour specials from 4 to 7pm.
  • Dining Room (56 Willoughby Street): Head to the back of this divey restaurant, where they’ll also be showing World Cup games. There aren’t soccer-specific specials, but take advantage of every day deals from 4 to 7pm - $4 drafts and bottled beers, plus $5 wines and well drinks.
  • Downtown Ale House (121 Livingston Street): Stop in during a tournament game and a Bud Light will only set you back $3.
  • Jose O’Shea’s at the Sheraton (228 Duffield Street): As its name suggests, this is a Mexican-American fusion restaurant, and it will be playing games with sound, in addition to hosting happy hour specials.
  • Hill Country Barbecue Market (345 Adams Street): While live music entertains folks upstairs, stake out a spot in front of one of two TVs at Downtown Brooklyn’s newest barbecue paradise, where games will play with the sound on and happy hour specials will keep fans happy ‘til 7pm.
  • Junior’s (386 Flatbush Ave): If you happen to find yourself at the home of “New York’s Most Fabulous Cheesecake,” snag a seat in the lounge, where there are two television sets. Don’t see the game? Feel free to request a channel change.
  • Misdemeanor at the Nu Hotel (75 Smith Street): This sidewalk bar will be playing World Cup games throughout the week, but likely without the sound. Luckily, it’s happy hour until 7pm.
  • O’Keefe’s Bar and Grill (62 Court Street): For over 90 years, this Downtown Brooklyn staple has hosted the cheers and chants of thousands of sports fans. Stop by from 4 to 7pm and score $1 off any drink and settle in for a game on one of the many TV screens.

Christopher Santora Annual Dinner Dance is Tonight June 13, 2014

The parents of a firefighter {Christopher Santora} who died on September 11, 2001 decided early on to honor Their son and the nearly 3,000 victims who died that day by celebrating their lives. They established a
scholarship that gives college awards of $8,000 and $4,000 to graduating high school students in the New York area based upon an essay competition. We also give awards to elementary and middle school students in the school where Christopher was a teacher. He was a substitute teacher until he became a firefighter which was his dream. To date they have awarded nearly $600,000 to students and schools.

The essay competition is unusual as the judges {they have 50 judges} mark the students essays without any knowledge about them. All identification is removed so that the content of the essay is the determining factor in the winning. Contest winners have continued to the PHD level and there have also been had students who were in Special Education. We have had valedictorians and we have had good students win. All of the winners were passionate about what they wrote about. In addition they honor some special people each year who have made a significant difference in helping people remember 9/11.

This year they will honor Congressman Peter King who has supported 9/11 families since the beginning. He has worked very hard to bring communication between the Muslim community and the rest of America. He has worked to make sure our country is as safe as it can be. He has helped all America and us for a long time.

They are honored that he will be in attendance on Friday June 13, 2014 for our annual Dinner Dance in Riccaro's by the Bridge in Astoria Queens. They also honor special people who have helped us personally in making sure that our scholarship continues. We are pleased this year to honor our 3 daughters: Jennifer Santora, Patricia Santora Cardona and Kathleen Santora. They have worked hard for these past 13 years to make sure that all goes well.

The Scholarship is based on donations and events which they hold during the year. The biggest fundraiser is the Dinner Dance. We hope that if you are available you can attend. it is a joyous event.

Brooklyn Eats: Something’s cookin’ in Brooklyn

Ask any Brooklynite where to find some of the best cuisine in the world, and they’ll all tell you the same thing: Brooklyn! A bit biased? Perhaps. Completely true? We like to think so. Sure, you could grab a bagel from the grocery aisle or a slice from any old pizza chain, but why would you ever dream of doing that?!
BK’s latest food scene mixes the borough’s old favorites with a new generation of food creatives turning out some truly innovative and impressive bites (and sips). And what better way to sample the goods than to swing through Brooklyn Eats, a specialty food and beverage trade show on June 27, hosted by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. There’s nothing you can’t find in Brooklyn, so if you’re not busy sampling the goods, you’re doing something wrong!
Here’s how the event works: BK makers will be offering samples and selling on site (you’re welcome). If you’re up for a heartier bite, don’t leave without a visit to the Brooklyn Eats food court. All of this will be taking place at 630 Flushing Ave, the former Pfizer Building. This hub of Brooklyn innovation is an impressive model of cooperative creativity in a mammoth and historic building. Trust me, it’s worth a visit.
Get yourself over to Brooklyn Eats by taking the G train to Flushing Avenue (it’s a quick walk from the subway stop). The show opens to the public at 10 a.m., and from 3-5 p.m on Friday, June 27th. Brooklyn Eats will be open exclusively to food/beverage buyers. For more info, tickets, and directions visit Brooklyn Eats.

Brooklyn Navy Yard is nationally recognized

The US Department of the Interior’s National Park Service added the iconic 300-acre industrial park to the National Register of Historic Places Thursday, The
News has learned.
Navy Yard officials believe the new status will make it easier to obtain federal funding for projects like the $46 million Green Manufacturing Center, officials said.
“It’ll make securing historic tax credits easier for us with the purpose of restoring historic buildings and creating jobs,” Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation President David Ehrenberg told the Daily News Thursday.
The Yard is experiencing a development boom that includes a mega supermarket, new sound stages and medical labs. More than 330 businesses have generated roughly 7,000 jobs.
“Federal designation will help protect one of the country’s most storied naval districts while reinvigorating historic structures to help grow new businesses,” said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who waged a sustained push for the new status.
The industrial complex is the city’s oldest and largest and one of six original shipyards in the country, officials said. The federal designation puts it in the same league as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.

The US Department of the Interior’s National Park Service is expected to announce the designation early next week.
